Saturday, May 12, 1900: One hundred and twenty-five years ago today, The Chattanooga Daily Times reported news with a dateline from Johnson City and a date from May 11. Readers learned that “The lining in the draft stack of the Carnegie furnace caved in on Monday and caused the operation of the furnace to be discontinued. Wednesday the fire was put out and as soon as the stack (indecipherable) work looking to the repair will (several indecipherable words). It is not known yet how much the damage is or how long it will take to get things in readiness for operation again.”
