Tuesday, May 19, 1925: One hundred years ago today, the Johnson City Chronicle reported news with a dateline from Appalachian, Va., and a date from May 18. Readers learned that “Friday night the leaders of the four counties, Wise, Lee, Scott and Dickenson, met in the tabernacle at Norton for the purpose of uniting the boosting forces of these four counties in the big central organization launched at Pulaski some 60 days ago to tell the world about Southwest Virginia and aggressively foster an awakening among the leaders and citizens generally to the vast opportunities and possibilities of this section which is easily conceded to be the most important part of Virginia.”
