Saturday, April 7, 1900: One hundred and twenty-five years ago today, The Journal and Tribune reported news pertaining to Johnson City. “Among the visitors in the city yesterday was M. Cassey, a contractor on the O. R. & C. railroad (sic for Railroad), an extension of which is being built at the terminus of the road about twenty-five miles from Johnson City. He has a twelve mile contract and is employing 500 men and says he wants that many more. In fact, his mission here is to see if he can find men he can employ.

“It is very probable he will find but very few. He said last night he never knew labor to be so scarce (several indecipherable words) that he is having much trouble to find men.

“The road on which he is working may probably be extended to Marion.”
