A boxing match, a wedding, Kroger in Elizabethton and the proposed Memorial Hospital
Monday, June 9, 1930: Ninety-five years ago today, the Johnson City Staff-News reported that “Blow-by-blow returns of the world’s championship heavyweight boxing match between Jack Sharkey, American, and Max Schmeling, German, will be announced by The Chronicle and Staff-News Thursday evening, June 12. Returns will be received instantly by special wires direct from the ringside, and announcements will be made from the Main street (sic for Street) entrance of the Appalachian Publishers Building.
“In addition to the street and sidewalk space, arrangements have been made for parking space for several hundred automobiles directly in front of the building, and the crowd may be accommodated easily regardless of the weather.
“There will be no charge of any kind, of course.
