Today in Johnson City History, Monday, April 27, 2026

Tuesday, April 27, 1926: One hundred years ago today, the Johnson City Chronicle reported news with a dateline from Greeneville and a date from April 26. Readers learned that “It is reported that a skeleton of a human being has been found on the farm of Rufus Taylor, near Tusculum, and about three and a half miles from Greeneville. Mr. Taylor states that about fifteen years ago while working in a rather secluded portion of his farm he found what looked to him was a newly made grave with a note stuck on a stick at the head of it with the inscription, ‘Here He Lies.’ He also found a man’s silver signet ring nearby with the initials H. O. T. engraved on the ring. He did not pay any attention at the time, thinking possibly it was a joke or the grace of some pet buried by boys. Just recently following a heavy rain bones were washed out of the shallow grave, which gave every indication of being the skeleton of a human form.
