Saturday, February 2, 1901: One hundred and twenty-five years ago today, The Knoxville Sentinel reported news with a dateline from Johnson City. Readers learned that “A report is circulated here that an effort is being made to locate the Soldiers’ Home near the Watauga river (sic for River), east 6 miles from Johnson City, and that matter has attracted some attention because of the fact that the most prominent citizens of Elizabethton are advocating the location because it would place it at least half way between this city and their town. Those who are most actively favoring the Watauga Point location from Elizabethton are Col. C. P. Toneray, W. P. Dungan, a banker, Dr. J. H. Alexander, Dr. E. E. Hunter, Geo. E. Boren, J. N. Edens, Maj. H. M. Folson, J. M. Simerly and many others who are able to donate a site.
