Crimes, a society wedding, a tragic death and more
Tuesday, April 28, 1925: A century ago today, the Johnson City Chronicle reported that “A large 70-gallon moonshine still with seven or eight barrels of ‘mash’ was discovered Sunday by deputies on the side of Buffalo Mountain, about three miles south of Johnson City. Appearances indicated that the still had been in operation for about two years, although probably not in the same spot. Water was secured from a small spring and it is reported that the flow from this spring disappears a short distance away, going into the earth, instead of forming a branch.
“The still was watched Sunday night by deputies Dewey, Bacon and Kincheloe, and arrangements were made to bring it in to the city Monday morning.
