Saturday, October 6, 1900: One hundred and twenty-five years ago today, The Knoxville Sentinel reported news with a dateline from Johnson City. Readers learned that “C. C. Dye, of this city, has received information that his son, Charles B. Dye, died in the Philippine islands (sic for Islands) of malarial fever. The young soldier belonged to the Thirty-seventh (sic for Seventh) United States infantry. He left here in May, 1898, as a member of Company I of the First Tennessee regiment of volunteers, at the age of 18.
