Today in Johnson City History, Saturday, September 13, 2025

Thursday, September 13, 1900: One hundred and twenty-five years ago today, The Comet reported a news story primarily involving the Taylor brothers.. The dateline was Clarkson, Tennessee, and the date was September 9. Readers read that “One of the most brilliant entertainments of the valley this summer was the lecture of Hon. A. A. Taylor at Enon last night. His subject was ‘Life’s Poetry and Pearls,’ and the large audience to which he delivered It in his most eloquent manner was very appreciative. Just a month ago, Gov. Bob Taylor delivered his lecture on ‘Love, Laughter and Song,’ at the same church, and for the same purpose – for the benefit of the church. Enon is a beautiful little Baptist church in the valley near where Clark’s Creek empties into the Nola Chucky. It has been peculiarly blest in its financial struggles by having two such popular and distinguished men to lecture for us free. They were both glad to contribute their services to the debt-ridden church and commended the leading spirits in their worthy enterprise. Hon. Alf Taylor was unstinted in his praise of Dr. Wm. Smith, Wm. Harris and Maj. James Deakins, who have adhered to the enterprise with such persistence and zeal. The crowd last night was large and a neat sum was realized.
