Thursday, August 2, 1900: One hundred and twenty-five years ago today, The Comet published the following, which initially appeared in the Southern Farm Magazine: “I am suggesting nothing but pickle recipes this month. Housewives may be glad to have them at this season, as they are all good.

“California Mixed Pickles

“One dozen cucumbers cut into large pieces without geeling (sic for peeling).

“Three dozen onions chipped fine.

“One dozen large green bell peppers, chopped.

“Four large heads of cabbage.

“Mix well together and sprinkle with salt – about a pint will do. Put into a bag to drip for twelve hours; longer if it is not dry enough.

“Mix through it –

“Two ounces of white mustard seed

“Two ounces of black mustard seed

“Two ounces of turmeric

“Two ounces of celery seed

“Three quarters of a pound of ground mustard

“Four pounds of sugar

“Cover well with vinegar and let it all boil until the vinegar begins to thicken. This will make a little more than two gallons, and is the most popular pickle I have ever made.”

The writer also included a recipe for “Yellow Cabbage Pickles”
