Mayor and aldermen in the news, Great Smoky Mountains, and much, much more
Friday, December 7, 1900: One hundred and twenty-five years ago today, The Knoxville Sentinel reported news with a dateline from Johnson City. “The board of mayor and aldermen met last night to reorganize and select officers for the city. All members were present and took part in the business of the meeting except F. M. McNees, whose claim to serve as one of the aldermen from the Second Ward is being contested by H. M. Weiler. The board continued Recorder J. M. Martin in office, and selected the same police force. It made one change by electing J. B. Cox as city attorney in place of S. E. Miller. Mr. Cox has been a democrat (sic for Democrat) prohibitionist and is now claiming to be a republican (sic for Republican), at least the republican (sic) members of the board voted for him, while the democrats (sic) cast their votes for Mr. Miller, because they regarded him as entitled to be continued as well as the others retained in office and especially so since he claimed that he had been promised the place by those who supported Mr. Cox.”
