Happenings in Johnson City, circuit court and a meeting of doctors
Monday, November 3, 1924: A century ago today, the Johnson City Staff-News published several short news accounts about local residents, or about folks with a connection to the area. Some of the news accounts are as follows: “Mrs. N. L. Murrell and Miss Pauline Murrell of Marion, Va., spent a few hours in the city today en-route (sic) to Memphis.”
Marion, Virginia, which has recently been in the news because of the Hurricane Helene devastation, is located about 79 miles from Johnson City. It is located in a northeasterly direction from Johnson City.
“Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Gammon of Rural Retreat, Virginia, spent the week-end (sic) as the guests of their son, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Gammon on East Holston Avenue and Mr. Gammon’s sister, Mrs. W. T. Leach near Johnson City.”
Rural Retreat, Virginia is about 96 miles from Johnson City. It is northeast of Johnson City.
“Mr. and Mrs. Allen Harris and Mrs. Robert Martin returned Sunday from a motor trip to Lexington, Virginia where they visited their sons, Mr. Allen Harris, Jr., and Mr. Robert Martin, Jr., who are students this season at Washington and Lee University. While away they witnessed the W. and L. and University of Virginia football game in Charlottesville. Mrs. William Pond Harris, who has been visiting in New York, joined the party in Roanoke and accompanied them home.”
Lexington, Virginia is located about 189 miles from Johnson City, while Charlottesville, is about 291 miles from Johnson City.
“Mrs. F. K. Mortimer and little daughter Miss Mirian and Mr. James Mortimer Sr., of Pineola, North Carolina are the guests of Mrs. E. H. Mortimer on West Maple Street.”
Pineola, North Carolina, is approximately 45 miles from Johnson City.
The Mortimer family continued to be in the news column. “Mrs. George Angel after visiting her daughter Mrs. E. H. Mortimer on West Maple Street has returned to her home in Elk Park, North Carolina.”
Elk Park, North Carolina is about 30 miles from Johnson City.
“Mr. and Mrs. Will McCain and Miss Florence McCain after a visit as the guests of Mrs. E. T. Hart on East Holston Avenue have returned to their home in Butler, Tennessee.”
Butler is a community in rural Johnson County and is located about 28 miles from Johnson City. It is east of Johnson City.
“Mr. Edwin McCain has returned to Maryville, Tennessee where he will resume his school work (sic) after week-end (sic) vacation as the guest of Mrs. E. T. Hart on East Holston Avenue.”
Maryville College is located in Maryville, Tennessee, in Blount County. Maryville is about 123 miles from Johnson City and lies in a southwesterly direction from Johnson City.
“Mr. and Mrs. Hubert M. Boy of Greenville, South Carolina arrived Sunday and are the guests of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph E. Boy on 512 West Maple Street. Mr. and Mrs. Boy are enroute home from an extended honeymoon trip to Washington, D. C., and eastern points. From here Mr. and Mrs. Boy will go to Knoxville to visit Mr. Boy’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Boy.”
Greenville, South Carolina is about 121 miles from Johnson City.
“Judge and Mrs. C. J. StJohn and Miss Rilla Pitzer of Bristol motored to Johnson City and were the guests of Mr. and Mrs. F. B. StJohn on East Watauga Avenue.”
“Mr. Hugh Loftus Murrell of Washington, D. C., is the guest of Mrs. Cora Adams Peoples on West Watauga Avenue.”
“Mr. and Mrs. James W. Carter of Baltimore are expected to arrive this week to spend several days at the Hotel John Sevier.”
“Mr. and Mrs. John A. Mahoney and Mr. and Mrs. Hunter Galloway of Bristol motored to Johnson City Sunday and were the guests of Mrs. Emma J. Mahoney on East Unaka Avenue and Mrs. T. J. Galoway (sic) on Seventh Avenue.”
Seventh Avenue is now known as Chilhowie Avenue.
“Mr. and Mrs. D. C. Boy and family left Saturday for Bristol where they will visit his brother and sisters. From there they will go by automobile to Umatilla, Fla., where Mrs. Boy and children will spend the winter.”
Saturday, November 3, 1934: Ninety years ago today, the Johnson City Chronicle alerted readers that “Two cases were decided in Circuit Court Friday morning by Judge Ben Allen. The first suit, that of Swangle and Hardin vs. Troy Milligan, was completed with a verdict of $30 for the plaintiff. The second case to be presented was G. B. Boring vs. Hassie Ginley, the suit resulting from an automobile wreck some time ago, was decided in favor of the plaintiff, who received damages of $100.
“Cases tried during the afternoon:
“Mrs. Hassie Ginley vs. G. B. Boring – verdict for defendant.
“A. E. Bosbury et al vs. Frank Daniels, The Yellow Cob (sic) Co. verdict of $50 for the plaintiff.
“Yellow Cab Co., vs. A. E. Bosbury – verdict for defendant.”
Friday, November 3, 1939: Eighty-five years ago today, the Johnson City Press reported that “Sixty physicians and surgeons, it was learned today, attended a meeting held in the nurses (sic) home of Soldiers Home last night, when the faculty’s medical staff was host to the Washington County Medical Society.
“Following a dinner, the following subjects were discussed by the indicated speakers: ‘Some Untoward Reactions in Arsphenamine Therapy,’ Dr. Ernest Marcus; ‘Low Back Pain,’ Dr. Elmer Hill; ‘Serial Pyelography,’ Dr. C. K. Slade, and ‘Relation of Neuropsychiatry in General Practice,’ Dr. William P. Moore.
“Out-of-town physicians attending were Doctors Brown, Hoffman and Marrington of the Veterans Facility at Oteen, N. C.; Doctors Gooch and McBee, Bakersville, N. C.; Dr. Kidd, Banners (sic) Elk, N. C., and Dr. Frost, Elizabethton.”
The Soldiers Home is now known as the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center.
Oteen, North Carolina is about 65 miles from Johnson City. It is almost directly south of Johnson City.
Bakersville, North Carolina is located about 37 miles from Johnson City. It is south, and slightly east, of Johnson city.
Banner Elk, North Carolina is approximately 38 miles from Johnson City. It, too, is southeast of Johnson City.
