Friday, March 16, 1900: One hundred and twenty-five years ago today, The Knoxville Sentinel reported news with a dateline from Johnson City. Readers learned that “The Cranberry Iron & Coal company (sic for Company) wants five hundred men to work in its mines.

“The company intends to increase the output of the mines beyond that of any previous year. Col. C. H. Nimson, the general superintendent, says he can employ all the men who want work at fair wages. He has asked the East Tennessee & Western North Carolina Railway company (sic) to put on heavier rails and another train, as soon as possible in order to handle the passenger and traffic of that road.”
