Al Capone, the Science Hill choir and much more
Friday, May 29, 1925: A century ago today, the Johnson City Chronicle reported new about an exciting upcoming event to be held in downtown Johnson City. Readers learned that “The Big Seven Day Redpath Chautauqua opens Friday afternoon at 3 o’clock in the big new tent auditorium which has been erected on the corner of West Main and Boone streets (sic for Streets).
“Reports from the local committee in charge indicate that the Chautauqua this year will be a tremendous success.
“The Redpath Bureau is offering a program this year that has never been equaled by an Chautauqua circuit. A superb presentation of De Koven’s comic opera ‘Robin Hood’ by the May Valentine Opera Company Bachman’s Million Dollar Band, the popular comedy ‘Adam and Eva’ (possible sic for Eve) by a New York cast, Ruth Ford, noted mezzo-contralto in an Artists Night Recital, and stirring lectures on timely topics are leading lights on this year’s program.
