Races, a tragic death, the weather and more
Tuesday, August 21, 1900: One hundred and twenty-five years ago today, The Knoxville Sentinel reported two stories, both with datelines from Johnson City. Readers learned that “Capt. W. A. Dickinson, the proprietor of Piedmont Hotel went to Abingdon, Va., to attend the races there. He took ‘Tasso’ and two other horses with which to compete for the best stakes offered by Abingdon and Bristol people. One fast horse has, it is said, been sent from Elizabethton to the Virginia town as a sample of East Tennessee flyers.”
