Tuesday, April 17, 1900: One hundred and twenty-five years ago today, The Knoxville Sentinel reported news with a dateline from Johnson City. Readers learned that “J. R. H. Smith and E. E. Butler, Mountain City, Tenn., Lee W. Sams, Flag Pond; Geo. E. Boren, Esq., of Elizabethton, and J. F. Toney, of Erwin, met here last night at the Piedmont hotel (sic for Hotel) and go today to Nashville to attend the republican (sic for Republican) state convention, as delegates from Johnson, Carter and Unicoi counties (sic for Counties).”
