Tuesday, April 10, 1900: One hundred and twenty-five years ago today, the Chattanooga Daily Times reported news with a dateline from Johnson City and a date from April 9. “Sunday morning around 1 o’clock the large two-story house of Mr. and Mrs. James Curtis was discovered on fire. Half the building was in flames before it was seen, and it was hard work to rescue those sleeping in the front apartments. Nearly all the household effects were consumed with the building. The fire had gained such headway when the fire department arrived that they could save nothing except near-by (sic for nearby) buildings. The house and contents were only partially covered by insurance.”
