Lincoln was also the first president to be assassinated, on April 14, 1865, which was on Good Friday; he was assassinated at Ford’s Theatre at Washington, D. C. “His presidency encompassed the tragic Civil War. Especially remembered are his Emancipation Proclamation (January 1, 1863), his Gettysburg Address (November 19, 1863), and his proclamation establishing Thanksgiving Day. Born at Hardin County, Kentucky, he died at Washington, D. C., Lincoln’s birthday is observed as part of Presidents’ Day in many states but is a legal holiday in Illinois” on this day.
