Tuesday, April 9, 1816: On this day, the African Methodist Episcopal Church, which is often referred to in this column, was organized. “The first all-Black United States religious denomination, the AME Church, was organized at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, with Richard Allen, a former slave who had bought his freedom, as the first bishop.”
