Friday, October 3, 1924: A century ago today, the Johnson City Chronicle reported startling news. “Roscoe Hollyfield, 28, living on Rock Creek, near Erwin, died in a local hospital here shortly after nine o’clock Thursday night, from a gunshot wound admitted to have been inflicted by Noah McInturf (sic), of Erwin, on Wednesday evening. Relatives of Hollyfield, living near Erwin, were notified, and plans made to take the remains to his home. The deceased is survived by his widow and two children.
