Saturday, July 8, 1775: Two hundred and fifty years ago today, “The Second Continental Congress signed the Olive Branch Petition, a document drafted in an attempt to reconcile with Great Britain and avoid war. This petition, formally adopted by the Congress on July 5, was a last-ditch effort to appeal to King George III and express the colonists' loyalty while seeking redress for their grievances with Parliament.” (Source: Wikipedia.)

Sunday, July 8, 1900: One hundred and twenty-five years ago today, the Chattanooga Sunday Times reported several short news items, mainly of a social interest, with a dateline from Johnson City and a date of July 7. Readers learned that “Mrs. John W. Hunter is visiting her brother, H. L. Williams, in Washington City.

Washington City is now known as Washington, D. C.
