Lots of happenings in various places
Sunday, December 31, 1899: One hundred and twenty-five years ago today, The Journal and Tribune reported several brief news items, all with a dateline from Johnson City and a date of December 30. Readers learned that “The funeral of Samuel Renfro who came to his death by asphyxiation in New York city (sic for City) last Tuesday night will take place from his home at Elizabethton Sunday afternoon. His remains are expected from New York today. Mr. Renfro recently left Elizabethton to take some fine stock to the east for M. D. Chapman, who was until recently vice-president and general manager of the Virginia Southwestern railway (sic for Railway). Mr. Chapman is now in New York and telegraphed Mr. Renfro’s people that the body would be properly prepared and shipped so as to arrive here today.”
