The McAdams wreck and Al Capone
Wednesday, March 18, 1925: One hundred years ago today, the Johnson City Staff-News reported news about Miss Emma McAdams; previous news was reported several days ago. Readers learned that “Condition of Miss Emma McAdams, injured in an accident on Sunday, is reported as not materially changed, at the Appalachian Hospital Wednesday morning. She is said to be still unconscious; a report that she had regained consciousness proving to be untrue. She is suffering almost wholly from a blow on the head, no other injuries of any consequences being apparent. Her condition is still regarded as serious.
Tuesday, March 18, 1930: In an article with the byline of James L. Gilgallen, an International News Series Staff Correspondent, and with a dateline from Philadelphia, readers of the Johnson City Staff-News reported that “’Scarface’ Al Capone, most talked of racketeer in America, was at liberty today after having served a ten months sentence for carrying what the boys call a ‘rod.’ He made an ‘undercover’ getaway that was so mysterious, and marked by such solicitousness on the part of the authorities, as to provoke a furor that is re-echoing from one end of the city of brotherly love to the other.
