Sunday, March 4, 1900: One hundred and twenty-five years ago today, The Chattanooga Daily Times reported news with a dateline from Johnson City and a date from March 1. Readers learned that “With reference to an article which appeared in The Times Feb. 27, 1900, I beg leave to submit the following explanation, after a thorough investigation:

“First, the meeting at the opera house was not called for the purpose of denouncing the article from your correspondent which appeared in your issue of the 26th, because the meeting had been advertised by circulars all day Monday, and The Times did not reach Johnson City until 5 o’clock p. m., or less than two hours before the meeting.
