News from Washington College, the fire department and Science Hill
Wednesday, June 3, 1925: A century ago today, the Johnson City Staff-News reported news from Washington College. Readers learned that “President Hubert S. Lyle returned last week from an extended trip in Massachusetts and Ohio, where he attended the National Congress of the S. A. R., and the meeting of the general assembly.”
The S. A. R. is an abbreviation for the Sons of the American Revolution. Formed in 1889, the organization honors Revolutionary War patriot ancestors; the organization is still is existence.
“Rev. E. Hubert Broyles, Philadelphia, Pa., who graduated from Washington College in 1895, visited the college last Saturday and Sunday. He preached in Salem Church on Sunday morning and in the Mt. Carmel Church Sunday afternoon. It was in the Mt. Carmel Church when he was a mere boy, that he preached his first sermon. Mr. Broyles left Monday morning for Maryville College where he delivered the annual commencement address in the preparatory department.”
