Sunday, May 27, 1900: One hundred and twenty-five years ago today, The Chattanooga Sunday Times reported quite a number of short news items pertaining to folks in Johnson City, or those with relatives or business in the city. Some of these news items have appeared previously in this column, but in slightly different form. Johnson City was the dateline. The date was May 26. Readers learned that “Mrs. Henry Lyle and sister, Mrs. James Larrick, of Middletown, Va., returned Tuesday from a visit to relatives at Mossy Creek.”

Middletown, Virginia is about 335 miles from Johnson City; It is northeast of Johnson City.

Mossy Creek is now known as Jefferson City, which is located in Jefferson County. Jefferson City is about 78 miles from Johnson City; it is located to the west of Johnson City.

“Miss Maud Thomas, of Happy Valley, after a few days visit in Johnson City, left Tuesday for an extended visit to friends at Rogersville, Morristown, and Sweetwater.”

Happy Valley is a community in Carter County; there is also a Happy Valley community in rural Washington County, near the Greene County line.
