Thursday, April 16, 1925: A century ago today, the Johnson City Staff-News reported several short news items of interest to area residents. Some of these news items are as follows: “Mrs. Willie Cox Birdwell has returned from a three weeks stay in Philadelphia.”

It is assumed that the Philadelphia referred to is in Pennsylvania; however, there is also a Philadelphia, Tennessee, which is about 143 miles from Johnson City. It is located in Loudon County, and is southwest of Johnson City.

“Misses Margaret and Winnie Woodruff returned Monday from Lenoir and Winston Salem (sic for Winston-Salem), North Carolina, where they spent the Easter holidays as the guests of relatives and friends. While in Winston Salem (sic) they attended the Moravian Easter Services held at sunrise Sunday morning.”
