Monday, February 12, 1900: One hundred and twenty-five years ago today, The Knoxville Sentinel carried several short news accounts, all with datelines from Johnson City. Readers learned that “Henry Clay and wife, of New Bedford, Mass., are here for a few days. Mr. Clay is interested, as a stockholder, in the city water works.:

“Hon. Luke M. Banner, of Banner’s Elk, N. C., is spending a few days in the city on business. Mr. Banner was a few years since a member of his state’s legislature.”

Banner Elk, North Carolina was originally known as Banner’s Elk. However, when the town was incorporated in 1911, the name was changed to Banner Elk. It is located approximately 38 miles from Johnson City, and is southeast of Johnson City.
