Wednesday, March 4, 1789: “The first Congress met at New York, New York. A quorum was obtained in the House April 1 and in the Senate April 5, and the first Congress was formally organized April 6. Electoral votes were counted, and George Washington was declared president (69 votes) and John Adams vice-president (34 votes).” (Source: Chase’s Calendar of Events, 2026).
