Monday, June 11, 1900: One hundred and twenty-five years ago today, The Knoxville Sentinel reported news with a dateline from Johnson City. Readers learned that “The Ohio River and Charleston Railway company (sic for Company), is now running trains across the Chucky river (sic for River) at Chestoa. Contractors will proceed to lay the track at once up to the second bridge, near Hollow Poplar, N. C.

“The Cranberry Iron company (sic) has dropped off about three-fourths of its men at the mines.”

The Chucky River is now known as the Nolichucky River.

Chestoa is located in rural Unicoi County.
