A fire, a bad wreck, an interesting rat, Science Hill golf and more
Monday, April 9, 1900: One hundred and twenty-five years ago today, The Knoxville Sentinel reported news with a dateline from Johnson City. Readers were informed that “The dwelling house of Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Curtis, on Walnut street (sic for Street), caught fire about 1 o’clock Sunday morning. It was destroyed in a very short time. The fire progressed too far to be checked by the fire company. Some of the family barely escaped from the flames. Deck Hale, a cousin of Mrs. Curtis, came near losing his life in an attempt to save some articles.”
